348 athletes, coaches and chaperones will gather on Sat. March 5, 2011 for the 2011 District Basketball Tournament at St. Johns High School in St. Johns, Mich. The competition will feature senior male teams, which include athletes about 16 and older. This is one of six District Basketball Tournaments that will determine which athletes progress to the State Basketball Finals March 25-26 in Rockford, Mich. The competition will feature senior male teams, which include athletes about 16 and older. Teams will include athletes from eight areas and from the following counties, (Area 8) Ingham, Eaton, (Area 19) Jackson, Calhoun, (Area 7) Clare, Gladwin, Isabella and Gratiot, (Area 28).

Games will consist of four six minute quarter. First place teams will receive a trophy and second through fourth place teams will receive ribbons immediately after the tournament. Special Events including arts and crafts and other interactive activities will be offered throughout the day.

District Basketball Tournaments will take place in six communities including St. Johns, Bay City, Northville, Saline, Caledonia and Escanaba. The State Basketball Finals will be held March 25-26 at Rockford High School in Rockford. Approximately 800 athletes, coaches and chaperones will be in attendance.

PLEASE NOTE
  • There will be opening ceremonies at Court 1(High School) and Court 2 (Middle School) at 8:45am. Games will start at 9am on all 3 courts.
  • The 3 point shot will be utilized.
  • Each team should bring their own basketballs for warm-ups before games. Game balls will be provided and are the property of Special Olympics Michigan state office.
  • The entire High School and Middle School campuses are designated NO SMOKING zones. Special Olympics Michigan also endorses a NO SMOKING policy at all Special Olympics events.

 

PLACE

St. Johns High School and S.t Johns Middle School will be the site of the tournament.
There will be a shuttle bus, courtesy of Dean Transportation, available from 9a.m. to 4p.m. for those needing rides between the schools.

PARKING

There are parking lots at both of the schools. Please have your buses drop everyone
off at the doors and then park in the lots.

AWARDS

Individual trophies for first place teams and ribbons for 2nd through 4th medals will be awarded following each team's final game.

MEALS

Lunch will be available on Saturday for registered area delegation members only - athletes, coaches, and chaperones.

** Please be considerate of those teams and volunteers/referees needing to eat and get to their competition.

Saturday Lunch: St Johns High School Cafeteria -- 11:00 am - until all teams have eaten.
Menu: Tacos, Taco salad, Applesauce, chips, chocolate brownies & bottled water.

Spectators and family will be responsible for their own meals.

CONCESSIONS

There will be a concession stand, with avariety of snacks and drinks ($.50 to $2) available at both St Johns High School and Middle School. Pizza ($1/slice) is also available starting at 11a.m.until gone.

SOUVENIRS

Souvenirs will be available for sale at St Johns Middle School. Special Olympics T-shirts $10 and hoodies $20.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Activity Room (Middle School) - a variety of games and crafts will be available for athletes waiting to play their games. (Thanks to Girl Scout Troop 277.) Also a TV will be in the room for viewing. Follow the posted signs, or inquire at the information table.
