POKER RUN

The Wertz Warriors and Water Warriors, statewide civic partners of Special Olympics Michigan, are preparing to host their annual poker run on Lake St. Clair on June 29. The Lake St. Clair Fun Run is held every year on the last Wednesday of June. People from all over the state and some from out of state, come together with their boats to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan athletes.

  • Check-In at 8:30 a.m. at Mac & Ray's 30675 N. River Rd. Harrison Township, MI 48045

Tickets are $100 per person and include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Every participant travels by boat and stops at five locations where they receive a playing card as part of their poker hand. At the fifth location the first, second and third best poker hands receive a prize. Most of the boats in the poker run are performance boats. All of the boats racing around for their chance at the best poker hand becomes an amazing show for onlookers.

The event has approximately 50 boats and 200 participants, raising an average of $10-$15,000 each year. Over the past 15 years the event has raised $166,789. Money raised by the Wertz Warriors funds the Special Olympics Michigan State Winter Games, where they are also the presenting sponsor. The Water Warriors are the Presenting Sponsor for the State Poly Hockey Tournament.

To be a member of either organization, each member must contribute a certain amount of donations each year. Ann Plegue, Water Warrior, and her brother Wayne Schaldenbrand, Wertz Warrior, host this event as their contribution.

There are still openings available to participate in the 15th Annual Lake St. Clair Fun Run. If interested contact Ann Plegue at (586) 292-3853.
