Get Ready Michigan... the Water Warriors are Breaking the Waves!

Imagine riding 350 miles on nothing but a personal watercraft! Well that is just what the Water Warriors do on their five-day “Breaking the Waves” personal watercraft endurance ride to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) athletes.

Since 1991 the Water Warriors have raised more than $1.5 million dollars for Special Olympics Michigan allowing more SOMI athletes to participate in year-round sports training and competition.

Dozens of riders endure all types of weather and water conditions.  There are pre-planned fuel stops and overnight stays along eastern Michigan's beautiful Lake Huron shoreline along with many friends and supporters to cheer on the riders. MORE

13th Annual Lake St. Clair Fun Run a Success!

On Wednesday, June 24 boaters launched their watercraft to take part in the 13th annual Lake St. Clair Fun Run for Special Olympics Michigan athletes. The leisure Poker Run, put on by the Water Warriors, helps fund athletic training and competition for adults and children with intellectual disabilities. The day started at 8:30 at Mac & Ray’s in Harrison Township. Boaters then motored to Sinbad’s in Detroit, Idle Hour Yacht Club at Harsens Island then to Algonac Harbor Club and back to Mac & Ray’s. The event raised $12,646! A HUGE THANK YOU to the 41 boat loads - 200 people that participated and especially all of the family members and friends who volunteered that day to help make it a success. Thank you also to all of the winners who donated part of their winnings back to Special Olympics. MORE

Campaign for Disabilities Video Contest
The Campaign for Disability Employment (CDE), a newly-formed collaborative of leading disability organizations is sponsoring the "What can YOU do?" online video contest to promote the talent and skills that people with disabilities bring to America's workforce and economy.

The contest is an opportunity for young - and young-at-heart - filmmakers to promote positive change by illustrating that at work, it’s what people CAN do that matters. The Campaign is looking for creative, fun, compelling video public service announcements, of all genres, that will create positive images of people with disabilities at work and help viewers re-think their assumptions about people with disabilities and employment .MORE
