Upper Peninsula Area Director Honored With Distinguished Award!

Congratulations to Special Olympics Michigan Area 39 Director Barbra Siira on receiving the Upper Peninsula Service Award for her volunteer work and commitment to Special Olympics Michigan athletes! Siira was chosen from a long list of nominees from the Upper Peninsula Volunteer Network (UPVN). Siira was surprised, happy and humbled at the honor.

The UPVN connects volunteers with nonprofit organizations, provides volunteer management training and recognizes the volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty. MORE

20th Anniversary Special Olympics
Michigan Festival of Trees!

Join in the glitz, glamour and generosity at a joyous celebration that helps Special Olympics Michigan athletes in Kent and Barry Counties. The 20th Anniversary Special Olympics Michigan Festival of Trees includes an auction of exquisitely decorated trees, wreaths and centerpieces. The evening also includes delicious food, drinks, a silent auction and entertainment. Festival of TreesThe event features WZZM Channel 13 anchor Juliet Dragos as emcee and WLAV Radio personality Tony Gates as auctioneer. The event takes place on Saturday, November 21st at 6 p.m. at Breton Village Mall in Grand Rapids. The event is black tie optional. Tickets are $75 and can be ordered by calling (616) 583-1202. MORE

Runners at the 2008 Fifth Third Turkey Trot in Detroit
Trot with thousands of people at the 27th annual Fifth Third Turkey Trot and help Special Olympics Michigan athletes! The various races take place starting at 7:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning before the parade in downtown Detroit. This year, Thanksgiving falls on November 26th and Special Olympics Michigan needs runners, walkers and trotters, to participate in the 5K, 10K or the Mashed Potato Mile. Runners can donate to SOMI when they register to run at www.theparade.org, or at www.firstgiving.com. There is also an option for runners to create their own fundraising page from the first giving link. The deadline for on-line registration is November 21. The mail-in deadline is November 21. Late registration is available on Wednesday and Thursday, November 25 and 26 at Cobo Center. MORE
