Ban The Movie – Ban The Word Special Olympics invites you to be a fan of dignity and join in a campaign to stop the use of the “R-Word.” On Wednesday, August 13 the film “Tropic Thunder” opens in theatres across the nation. While intended to be a satire on Hollywood actors and producers, the film contains scenes which are offensive and demean people with intellectual disabilities.
Five coaches will represent Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) as coaches in the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, held Feb. 6-13.
The World Games will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in the state of Idaho, expecting to unite more than 3,000 athletes from more than 85 nations to compete in seven Olympic-styled sports including Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, snowboarding, snowshoe racing and speed skating.
Oakland County and Area 15 coach, Marcus Mann, will guide Team USA in the snowboard events. Kalamazoo and Area 16 coach, Mike Bielski, will lead Team USA in the alpine skiing division along with Mary Laskowski from Kent County, an Area 11 coach. Area 26 and Detroit coaches Roger Rakowski and Patricia Hancy will direct Team USA in cross country skiing.
