Dean Wallin with award

HALL OF FAME: Dean Wallin
Dean Wallin is an extraordinary volunteer with over 45 years of service to Special Olympics Michigan, primarily as the staging announcer at Track and Field events. His dedication to ensuring every athlete is recognized and celebrated, coupled with his exceptional organizational skills, has made a lasting impact on the success of these events. Dean also played a pivotal role in the State Winter Games, creating the Winter Wonderland event and bringing the same passion and attention to detail. Known for his camaraderie with fellow volunteers like Don Stabenow, Dean’s cheerful personality and tireless efforts inspired others to return year after year.  Dean’s unwavering commitment to the athletes and volunteers embodies the spirit of Special Olympics Michigan, making him a deserving inductee into the Hall of Fame.

HALL OF FAME: Lyle Hanson
Lyle Hanson has been a devoted volunteer coach for the Midland area,  dedicating 50 years—over two-thirds of his life—to the program. Starting as Head Coach when the program offered only Athletics, Lyle trained participants in events like running, high jump, and softball throw. His leadership and dedication have helped the program grow to 12 sports, and he continues to coach today, inspiring athletes with self-respect, confidence, and individualized challenges. As a retired high school teacher, Lyle brought his expertise to coaching, fostering unselfishness and high standards among students and athletes alike. He has volunteered over 13,000 hours and served in roles such as chaperone, board member, fundraiser, and mentor, earning love and respect from athletes, coaches, and volunteers. With support from his wife Joannie and contributions from his family, including his daughter and son-in-law’s efforts to establish a Cycling program, Lyle’s impact has profoundly shaped Special Olympics in the Midland area and state.
