WAVERLY High School Named to ESPN Honor Roll for Inclusive Efforts

Waverly High School has been named to the 2021 ESPN Honor Roll for its efforts in promoting an inclusive school culture for students with intellectual disabilities. Waverly High School is the only Michigan school, and one of only 36 schools nationwide, to make the list.

Virtual Fall Games announced for October 4-6

SOMI is excited to announce a new virtual event: the first-ever Virtual Fall Games presented by Real Estate One Charitable Foundation! Registration is open now through September 24. Competition will then take place from September 25 through October 2 where participants can select from a dozen sporting events including cycling, golf, bocce, softball and fitness events. The Virtual Fall Games will culminate in a three-day, online celebration from October 4-6 featuring an Opening Ceremony, special events and a highlight show consisting of participant-submitted competition videos.

Athletes Like Audrey event streaming live on August 24

The virtual Athletes Like Audrey event will occur on Monday, August 24 at 12:00 p.m. The event will be live-streamed with the funds raised going to the Athlete Recovery Fund. Grab your lunch and join us for the 30-minute production, including keynote speaker and SOMI athlete CJ VanSkiver, along with an array of other voices from the SOMI community.

Special Olympics Michigan has partnered with singer Tiffany Bynoe on a brand new genre-crossing album that's guaranteed to inspire and get you on the dance floor. All of Us, the first single off the soon-to-be released EP Including Me, is now streaming worldwide.

In-person events postponed through July 31, Virtual Summer Games still happening

Following guidance from Special Olympics International (SOI), Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) has made the decision to extend its postponement of in-person events through July 31, 2020 as it formulates a gradual return to activities plan.

Virtual Summer Games taking place July 19-25

The Virtual Summer Games presented by SpartanNash takes place July 19-25 with a 6-week at-home health and wellness training program beginning June 8. This event is open to anyone and everyone, whether you're a SOMI athlete, volunteer or fan. Be a part of this first-of-its-kind, home field advantage event!

Bottle Drive benefiting SOMI

Bottles piling up? The final Law Enforcement Torch Run bottle drive takes place June 10 at various cities across Michigan. Proceeds from the bottle drive benefit Special Olympics Michigan.

Events postponed through June 30, Virtual Summer Games planned for July

All in-person SOMI events have been postponed through June 30. A Virtual State Summer Games is being planned for the week of July 20 with more details to come on this event in the near future.

State Summer Games Postponed

Due to concerns related to the spread of the coronavirus, Special Olympics Michigan has made the decision to extend its postponement of in-person events through May 31. This postponement includes the 2020 State Summer Games, originally scheduled for May 28-30 at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant.

Eric Lemmon: Cancer survivor, marathon runner

Eric Lemmon’s first cross-country skiing practice in 2018 didn’t go as planned. Halfway through his first race, he collapsed. Eric wasn’t sure what had happened, but he knew something wasn’t quite right.
