Instead of hitting the water at a traditional Plunge location, now the choice is up to you on where, when and how you want to get bold and cold for the athletes of Special Olympics Michigan. The annual Michigan Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Michigan will shift to a virtual format this winter, making way for some exciting changes to the beloved event’s traditional cold water format.
Special Olympics Michigan has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 State Winter Games. While this decision is extremely disappointing, SOMI athletes and fans can look forward to seeing smaller-scale, high-quality, local sporting events at various locations throughout Michigan this winter. At-home and virtual training and fitness opportunities will also continue to be offered.
As Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) and its local programs across the state continue to navigate a gradual return to activities, the organization has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 State Poly Hockey and Unified Bowling Finals.
Waverly High School has been named to the 2021 ESPN Honor Roll for its efforts in promoting an inclusive school culture for students with intellectual disabilities. Waverly High School is the only Michigan school, and one of only 36 schools nationwide, to make the list.
SOMI is excited to announce a new virtual event: the first-ever Virtual Fall Games presented by Real Estate One Charitable Foundation! Registration is open now through September 24. Competition will then take place from September 25 through October 2 where participants can select from a dozen sporting events including cycling, golf, bocce, softball and fitness events. The Virtual Fall Games will culminate in a three-day, online celebration from October 4-6 featuring an Opening Ceremony, special events and a highlight show consisting of participant-submitted competition videos.
